Alen A375UV Air Purifier Review

Retail Price: $599

OVERVIEW: The Alen A375UV Air Purifier that I own is a nice upgrade from the earlier A350 which I reviewed on Youtube. The A375UV is essentially the A350 with additional Ultraviolet light added (Hence the "UV" in the name) and a Tio2 catalytic post filter which essentially improves the Ultraviolet light benefits.

Upgraded A350

The difference ultraviolet lights ability to kill germs, bacteria and viruses. This is a nice addition which many air purifiers do not address. While HEPA is essential for dust and pollen removal in cases where allergies are an issue - removing germs and bacteria are also a factor in a weakened immune system.

The nice sized HEPA, Carbon and prefilter shows this air purifier as having nice range of features. However it comes with a very hefty pricetag of $599. It's not one of the more popular models on the market, and the price is definitely going to keep it from becoming more popular. The A350 is Alen's primary money-maker.

Expensive Maintenance

Maintaining the unit is mandatory, not voluntary, for the warranty (more on this in the warranty section further down)

The replacement HEPA filter will last 4-9 months in the average home - $59 each = $120 a year

The replacement Pre filter/Carbon will last 4-9 months in the average home - $89 each so about $100 a year

Uv Bulbs will last 1 year and are on sale @ 2 for $59 - $59 a year

CONCLUSION: Maintaining the Alen A375UV will set you back about $289 a year (although you can probably find them for a bit less on Amazon, Ebay, etc.).

LifeTime Warranty Problem

While the Alen A375UV comes with a lifetime warranty it requires you to be on their filter auto-ship program as per their Manual:

"Alen warrants your Alen Air Purifier to be free from defects in material or workmanship for as long as you own your air purifier. Buyers must register and Participate in the Filter Replacement Program. Two replacement HEPA filters are shipped to you every year on your registration anniversary for as long as you own your machine."The HEPA filter is $59 every 6 months" Even if you left the machine off most of the time, or did not need filter replacements every 6 months you have to buy them (at least the HEPA) to maintain the warranty. So "Lifetime Warranty" sounds great, and it is - for the Alen Corp.

Now let's take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The Alen A375UV air purifier has 5 stages:

Stage 1 HEPA - best for allergies, dust and pollen.

Stage 2 Carbon - absorbs odor and chemicals

Stage 3 UV - Ultraviolet light (2 bulbs) kills germs, bacteria and viruses.

Stage 4 Tio2 - enhances UV light to kill germs, bacteria.

I recommend the Alen A375UV Air Purifier, because it covers many bases by incorporating almost all technologies. I own one myself. However the high initial cost and replacement filters make me hesitate to make it a good value when there are other units offering the same technology at a lower price.

I also take issue with the use of 'Lifetime Warranty" which sounds great but comes with a clause of having to be on auto-ship for a minimum of $120 a year (even if you don't need them). Plus you'll have to replace the UV or it won't be effective (another $54/year). Most filters like this one cost the company about $5 to make.
