In this air purifier moldy room review I'll be sharing the 4 different technologies (each does something different, with pros and cons of each) when it comes to mold. Hopefully this will allow you to make an informed decision. Unfortunately most air purifiers (despite the claims) don't do anything for killing mold.
Claims about HEPA air purifiers helping with mold is misleading. That's because HEPA filters only capture mold spores, they do absolutely nothing to kill the mold. HEPA will only minimize the mold spreading faster.
That means models such as Austin Air, IQAIR, Honeywell (and other HEPA air purifiers) will not kill mold. It also may cause problems inside the HEPA filter - as mold can grow there. To kill mold you have to go out into the room where the mold exists.
Common forms of mold can include Fusarium, Mucor, Alternaria, Aspergillus Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Penicillium and Stachybotrys. Mold loves to grow in places that are warm, wet or damp, and dark. Mold itself is not the main culprit to trigger allergic or asthma, instead it's the spores (which are seeds) floating in the air that will cause sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and runny noses. This in turn threatens the immune system for many people.
Below I'll cover the four types that can help.....
YOUR MOLD PROBLEM IS INSIDE SHEETROCK, OR RUGS, AN AIR PURIFIER WILL LOWER THE HEALTH THREAT BUT WON"T REMOVE THE MOLD INSIDE.
YOU'RE MOST LIKELY GOING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE SHEETROCK AND RUGS. IT CAN
HOWEVER PREVENT IT FROM
SPREADING....PLEASE DON'T COMPROMISE ON YOUR HEALTH...
Here are the fours types of Mold Air Purifier Technologies:
UV (Ultraviolet) Light. A UV lamp (minimum 10,000 uwats per second of exposure) can kill almost every biological contaminant in the air EXCEPT mold. To kill mold you'd need 350,000 uwats per second of exposure. So it's limited. I personally like the combination of UV and negative ions as one kills the spores while the other goes out into the room where mold is spreading. It also helps keep mold from growing inside the HEPA filter.
Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) - This nanotechnology enhances Ultraviolet light up to 1000x, and hence helps UV do a much stronger job on Mold and Mildew Odor. It needs UV light to shine on it.
Negative Ionizers. Negative ions will kill mold on walls and in rooms. Not as fast or effective as Ozone on the other hand it is actually good for lung problems. Negative ions can increase energy and mood according to Russian research.
Ozone. By far the most effective at rapid mold and mildew removal Ozone will go out into a room, and onto walls, where it will kill it on contact. The downside is that Ozone in high levels will also irritate lungs. So if you have an ongoing problem you might get an air purifier to "treat" a room. In other words turn the Ozone up and leave the room closed. Turn it off and let it "air out" for several hours. Ozone tends to dissipate very fast. (Watch the video for information about Ozone - it's pro's and Con's)

If you have moldy sheet rock replace it. If you have dampness (from flooding, humidity, etc.) then you'll going to want an ozone Mold Air Purifier (No air purifier will not fix moldy sheet rock mold). You'll also need professional help if it is under floors, behind walls, inside wood, etc. Mold is very dangerous to human health, and some houses have to be re-modeled or even destroyed if the mold is too great. Any mold Air Purifier is just a way to protect your immune system and minimize the problem.
Keeping the humidity down with a dehumidifier or A/C is a must.
If the problem is small, or contained, then a small ozone mold air purifier or negative ion unit may be all you need. Just don't use ozone on all the time as it can irritate lungs.
